Chapter 13 highlights the importance of contributions by journalists and media to public knowledge and social progress. With new technologies and platforms, the landscape of media is constantly shifting. As citizens, we have become accustomed to reading news and information for free – this poses a financial challenge for the news sources who need to pay their journalists. Additionally, we want our information fast and as up-to-date as possible, which stands in contrast to the time that rigorous, accurate, and comprehensive research demands.

Where do you get your news from? Do you pay? How would you consider adjusting your behavior to make quality journalism viable and information free: contribute from your own pocket, support government subsidies, …? What do you think of the trade-off between fast information and rigorous research?
