Should we have a world government?

There are many global problems, such as those linked to conflicts, natural resources in international waters, climate change, cross-border pollution, that would be better addressed if there was a central authority with the power to force national governments to comply with global arrangements.

At the moment, this idea is not popular, and many fear that a world government could become too powerful and oppressive, or would simply represent the rich countries and attend to their interests.

What do you think of this idea? Can you imagine ways in which a central authority at the world level would be viable and beneficial, or should we look for an alternative solution?

I think a world government, like any powerful government, has the potential to be corrupt and abusive. However, we need governments despite this possibility of harm. Like with a local or national government, we have to accept the fact that this institution will exist, and then try to find ways to make it as just as possible: maximize efficiency, transparency, and democracy while minimizing corruption and abuse.
