Section 5 of Chapter 16 on Religions and Social Progress argues that religions have the potential to be generate conflict as well as peace: “The range of religious combatants and victims is broad indeed.” (#216).

On the other hand, religions often play a substantitive role in conflict reconciliation (#229), upholding human rights and justice (#232), promoting peace and offering individuals a path out of violence (#233). Moreover, “religions have … powerful potential as initiators of social change” and in promoting social progress (#352).

How can religions be peace-builders rather than conflict-generators?  Share your ideas and experiences to explore how this can happen. What can citizens do, what can religious structures do, what can other organizations do?
